John R. Ruddy, MD

Although he is a recent addition to the staff of the Center for Sleep and Wake Disorders John R. Ruddy, M.D. has a long practice experience. After graduating from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completing a flexible internship Dr. Ruddy began his career in a rural general practice on the coast of Washington state. From there he returned to his home state of Colorado and proceeded on to a residency in internal medicine in Denver. During that residency he was first exposed to sleep recordings. He was fascinated with these physiological studies and wanted to formally pursue this area of medicine. With this as a goal he completed a fellowship in clinical Sleep Disorders Medicine at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, California.

After his fellowship Dr. Ruddy has mainly worked in academic settings, including the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, National Jewish Center in Denver, and most recently, New York University School of Medicine. In all of these positions he has combined the clinical practice of sleep disorders medicine with teaching the basics of sleep disorders to medical residents and sleep and pulmonary fellows. In addition to being board certified in Sleep Disorders Medicine Dr. Ruddy is board certified in Internal Medicine and holds a certificate of added Qualification in Geriatric medicine.

Throughout his career Dr. Ruddy’s primary interest has always been delivering excellent patient care and so he is excited about joining this facility which has the same focus. While being a sleep “generalist” he has a special interest in disorders of excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep related breathing disorders, circadian rhythm disturbance, and sleep difficulties in patients with other medical illnesses. Dr. Ruddy enjoys hiking, swimming, and biking.
